Governors' Welcome

Welcome to the governors’ section of the Balshaw’s website. Our intent, embedded in the school’s Christian ethos, is to ensure that all our pupils can learn in a safe and inspiring environment. Our intent is to strive for excellence for all students, maintaining cherished surroundings so that skills and knowledge can be developed in all aspects of their lives. Our intent is to ensure that all students are fully prepared for their life journey beyond Balshaw’s and to take with them, into their futures, our school motto, ‘non sibi sed aliis’: not for oneself, but for others.

We recognise the need to work as a team, making full use of our knowledge, skills and experience. Our intent is to provide support and challenge for the Headteacher and the wider community. To do this we will:

  • Ensure that students are our priority, believing that all can be successful
  • Confirm that all students have opportunities to develop as a whole person, flourish and live life in all its fulness
  • Ensure and maintain the school’s distinctive Christian ethos and character
  • Uphold the school’s declared mission statement and the Church of England’s Vision for Education
  • Ensure that community links are maintained and encouraged to flourish
  • Identify, prioritise and evaluate issues
  • Understand the school’s values, aims and objectives
  • Review and approve policies when required
  • Listen and ask questions
  • Always treat others with respect

We will also use our knowledge, skills and experience as a governing board to pay particular attention to the following areas:

Resources

We will:

  • Monitor finances to ensure that the school remains financially sustainable
  • Monitor staffing, training and support so that standards continue to thrive
  • Maintain the premises to provide the best possible learning environment
  • Ensure that money is well spent

Curriculum and Standards

We will:

  • Review the curriculum offer at KS3 and KS4 to ensure that it is broad, balanced and meets the needs of our students
  • Receive updates on the latest teaching pedagogy
  • Monitor the quality of teaching and learning
  • Monitor school performance to ensure high levels are achieved and sustained
  • Focus on the performance of target groups including Pupil Premium pupils
  • Celebrate our strengths and identify areas for development

Student Welfare and Ethos

We will:

  • Ensure that all our students are safe and able to thrive
  • Work as a team to ensure that key issues are monitored and evaluated
  • Monitor provision for those with special needs and/or disabilities are supported, so that they can achieve
  • Monitor attendance, behaviour, anti-bullying, safeguarding and student welfare
  • Monitor and evaluate pastoral provision for all students
  • Ensure that all students have equal opportunities

These three focus areas form the basis of our sub-committees that meet three times per year and report to the Full Governing Board.
